Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the U.S., and the third leading cause of cancer death. It is highly preventable through early detection and treatment. However, screening rates for the most vulnerable members of our community remain too low.
Thanks to a $75,000 grant from the Exact Sciences FOCUS Program, SFCHC is working to reduce barriers to care, address health equity and improve colorectal screening rates among patients in the San Fernando Valley. The funding will be used to educate the community about the importance of screening, reduce financial and logistical barriers, and specifically target uninsured and underinsured adults aged 45 to 75.
Over the next 18 months, SFCHC will distribute educational materials to patients and healthcare providers, provide transportation assistance to those who have difficulty getting to and from screening appointments, and develop protocols to provide holistic care to each patient. This collaborative approach also aims to address social determinants and mental health conditions that affect a patient’s ability to seek preventive care.
"Colorectal cancer screening is an important first line test to help detect potential cancer, but it can be very difficult to complete for our patients,” said SFCHC Medical Director Vishaal Buch, MD, Adult Medicine, who worked diligently to secure the funding. “With this grant, we can help our community get their cancer screening test by having better communication and better access. We look forward to supporting our patients and their health!"
